My favorite books and Groundhog Day – a day later

Yesterday was Groundhog Day in the United States. I live in Pennsylvania, not far from Punxsutawney so it gets quite a bit of attention here. Yes, I have personally made the trek up Gobbler’s Knob to hear the famous marmot give his decree. The prognosticator of prognosticators declared six more weeks of winter yesterday. Snow lovers rejoice. Think this is ridiculous? Good. That is the point. It’s supposed to be fun! It is all about breaking up the winter boredom and not taking yourself too seriously.

Groundhog Day is celebrated on February 2nd, which is also Candlemas. The halfway point of winter. Winter is the time my family hunkers down at our house. We just are. The holiday craziness is over and we are gearing up for a busy spring. We need this time to recharge as a family and as individuals. For me, that means lots of reading…
